ABOUT UGC NET
The National Educational Testing Bureau of University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to establish eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to maintain minimum standards for the candidate. The test is held twice in a year in the months of June and December. For candidates who are inclined to pursue research, the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) is available, after fulfilling certain conditions. UGC has provided a number of fellowships to the universities for the aspirants who qualify the test for JRF. The JRFs are awarded to the candidates who get merit in the test and fulfill certain criteria from among the candidates for eligibility for lectureship in the NET. JRFs are available only to the candidates who fill it in their form. The test for Junior Research Fellowship started from 1984. The Government of India issued its notification on 22nd July, 1988 and assigned the task of conducting the eligibility test for lectureship to UGC. UGC conducted the first NET, both for Lectureship and Junior Research Fellowship in two parts i.e. in December 1989 and in March, 1990.
